New MacBook Air software update brings trio of fixes
Apple on Thursday put out a small software update to users of its latest 2013 MacBook Airs, one that promises to fix a trio of issues that affected some users:This update fixes an issue that in rare instances may cause an intermittent loss in wireless connectivity, an issue with Adobe Photoshop which may cause occasional screen flickering, and an issue which may cause audio volume to fluctuate during video playback. It's unclear how many users were affected by these issues, and whether they occurred only in specific models.Apple released new MacBook Air hardware during its annual developers conference last month. The new models boast better battery life and speedier solid-state drives than previous iterations, along with next-generation 802.11ac Wi-Fi.The small, 3.35MB update can be downloaded directly from Apple, or found in the software update tool inside the Mac App Store.

New Mac Minis said to join rumored iPad Mini debut
Next week's iPad Mini event, which remains a rumor at this point, may be bring another Mini product along for the ride.Apple will also update its Mac Mini desktop computers, says Apple blog 9to5mac. The publication says Apple will stick with its existing lineup of two machines aimed at consumers and a server model. Those devices will be available "immediately" after the event the blog says.Apple's Mac Mini was last updated in July 2011 with a bump to Intel's Sandy Bridge platform, the addition of Thunderbolt I/O, and the removal of optical disc drives across the line. The unveiling event for that product, along with an iPad mini and now a 13-inch MacBook Pro with a Retina Display are all rumored for October 23. New MacBook Airs include OS X on a USB key
New MacBook Airs include OS X on a USB key
A nice option that now comes tucked away in the MacBook Air's included documentation is a USB key containing a full version of the Mac system software and iLife '11 suite. When plugged into the computer, holding down the "C" key as you boot up treats the USB stick just like an optical disc, letting you run system diagnostics, or do a clean re-installation of OS X. Apple has long included the same tools on CDs, and later DVDs, but given the Air's reliance on external disc drives, this proves to be a much more user-friendly option for those without. Is this pack-in a sign of things to come from the hardware and software maker? It very well could be a future option of bringing upgrades, like the upcoming 10.7 Lion to the Air when it arrives next summer. Either that, or through the Mac App Store, which Apple said will be coming to computers running Snow Leopard (10.6) in the next 90 days.

New iPod Touch could match taller size of new iPhone
New iPod Touch could match taller size of new iPhone
The next iPod Touch may join the next iPhone is bumping up its screen size, according to new reports.Citing its "Asian sources," Japanese blog site Macotakara claims that the fifth-generation iPod Touch will offer a four-inch LCD display, just like the upcoming new iPhone. But that's not all.The next iPod Touch could be equipped with the same processor found on the iPhone 4S, say Macotakara's sources, which means an upgrade from the A4 to the A5 chip. Other specs may match that of the iPhone 4S as well. The next model will reportedly have a different back-case style -- buffed aluminum instead of the polished stainless steel mirror design. And potential buyers may get a choice of black or white. The next-gen iPod Touch also has an extra hole on the lower part of the back case, but the sources had no clue as to its purpose.Adding further fuel to the fire, KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo issued a report yesterday saying that a new iPod Touch is in the works, as reported by MacRumors. The next model will be equipped with the same in-cell touch display technology reportedly slated for the next iPhone. Such technology helps keep the device thin and light.Kuo believes Apple will launch the new iPod Touch in September or October, the same time the next iPhone is expected to debut.

New iPhones, iPods reportedly in Apple's retail system
New iPhones, iPods reportedly in Apple's retail system
While we're less than a week out from Apple taking the wraps off the next version of the iPhone, new models--yes you read that right, models--of the company's portable devices are already said to be in its inventory system.Citing new information from "Mr. X," a frequent leaker of Apple product numbers, 9to5mac reports that two new iPhones have appeared in the company's inventory system alongside three new iPod Touch models. Before getting too excited, 9to5Mac says the new models are marked with the hardware identifier "N90A" as opposed to the current iPhone 4's "N90" designation, and could very well be 8GB variations of the existing iPhone meant for entry-level buyers. As for the iPods, the three new units carry the "N81A" identifier, which the outlet suggests could merely be to designate new white models. That's compared to the "N81" marking on Apple's existing iPod Touch models, which are only available in black.Notably missing is a set of model numbers for a new iPhone line. At next week's event, Apple is largely expected to launch a successor to the iPhone 4 that improves on the older model with a faster processor, a better camera, and a thinner design.Model numbers are frequently on Apple's internal inventory system before the products themselves are released. In recent months that's included updates to Macs as well as accessories like Apple's Time Capsule line.

New iPad to launch in China on July 20
New iPad to launch in China on July 20
Apple will begin selling its latest iPad in China on July 20, the company said today. The price will be similar to that in other markets -- between $499 and $699, depending on the storage. While the new iPad has been out elsewhere for months, it is just arriving in China, an increasingly important market to Apple. The company is beginning to generate more revenue from Chinese consumers, who see Apple products as a status symbol. The iPad's continued success has enabled Apple to dominate the still-nascent tablet market. While other companies have attempted to breach the market, they have only met with muted success. Google is attempting to get into the market itself with the $200 Nexus 7, while Amazon is believed to be preparing a follow-up to its Kindle Fire. The iPad will be available in China via Apple's Web site, authorized resellers, and by reservation from Apple retail stores. Reservation requests will be accepted beginning July 19. As in other markets, the older iPad 2 willbe sold for $399.

iTunes 9.0.2 improves app sorting
iTunes 9.0.2 improves app sorting
Problems sorting apps were not completely resolved by this iTunes update if all the home screens and the extra ones are completely populated. In this case, you lose any chance of moving the apps around effectively. However, there is a work-around--simply sync one more app back to your iPhone and iTunes will add another grayed out home screen. The exception being that this screen will now be mostly empty giving you the work space you need to get your apps sorted the way you want them. When you are done, make sure that extra app is the only one left on the extra home screen and delete it once you are satisfied with the way your apps or home screens are arranged. This last step is optional; however, I recommend you perform it to prevent apps from accidentally being placed onto this screen. If you add more apps by syncing or purchases iPhone OS will recreate it.iTunes app sorting--make some room for temporary workspace by syncing one extra app back to your iPhone.Additional information about iTunes 9.0.2 enhancements, bug fixes, and download linksfor Windows or Mac OS X can be found at download.com.
